5 Signs of Transmission Problems and Failure
30 June, 2023

Transmission is a critical component that is responsible for transferring power from the engine to the wheels. If you suspect your vehicle may be experiencing transmission problems, it’s important to pay attention to the signs immediately. In this article, we will discuss some common early signs of transmission problems and failure that every vehicle owner should be aware of.

1.Warning Light :

If this warning light turns on, you should immediately stop your vehicle and turn it off when it’s safe to do so. Your transmission could be overheating when there are low transmission fluid levels, worn internal components, and several other reasons. Not every vehicle contains a transmission warning light. If your car has one of these lights, it could look different depending on the model you drive.

2.Delayed Shifting & Slipping Gears :

You may notice a significant pause or hesitation when shifting from park to drive or from one gear to another. Even an automatic can run into problems when shifting gears. This can include delays, shaking, and shuddering when shifting, or the system may be unresponsive. This also may lead to a Slipping gears problem, when a sudden loss of power while accelerating gears.

Slipping gears occur when the transmission fails to stay in the appropriate gear, resulting in a decrease in acceleration and a noticeable increase in engine RPM (revolutions per minute) without a corresponding increase in vehicle speed. This delay can indicate problems such as worn-out clutch plates, low transmission fluid, or issues with the transmission control module.

3.Leaking Fluid :

Transmission fluid is vital for operating and lubricating your vehicle’s transmission. If you notice red or brownish fluid leaking from your vehicle or the transmission warning light turns on, it could indicate a transmission leak. Ignoring a fluid leak & low fluid levels can lead to low fluid levels, resulting in overheating and potential transmission failure.

4.Strange Noises:

If you feel shaking or vibrating when the vehicle is in motion or any unusual noises, such as grinding, whining, or buzzing sounds, coming from the transmission should not be ignored. These noises can indicate transmission problems or damaged internal components. Promptly diagnosing and repairing the source of these noises can prevent further transmission damage.

5.Burning Smell :

A burning smell, especially one that is similar to a burning odor of overheated or burning oil, could indicate a transmission problem. This may be caused by overheated transmission fluid. If you notice this kind of smell, please have your transmission inspected as soon as possible.

If you experience any of these signs, having your vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible is highly recommended. Identifying early signs of transmission problems may help you detect issues right away, potentially preventing costly repairs or transmission failure.
